Lawn Renovation

If your lawn is in need of a serious transformation, our lawn renovation service will bring your yard back to life. In order for us to guarantee the success of this service, it involves eliminating the pests that have troubled your lawn, feeding the existing grass to strengthen the root system, making necessary soil amendments and then in the fall aggressively aerating your lawn and reseeding it.

Our Lawn Renovation program includes:

  • First, we get rid of the underlying pests that are preventing healthy growth.

  • Second, we add nutrients and amend to soil

  • In the fall (mid-August through September) we will aggressively aerate the lawn with specialized equipment, loosening compacted soil for optimal seed contact. Next, we immediately overseed the lawn with a seed blend that is best suited for your location.

  • The seed will be worked into the loose soil by raking or dragging.  This provides seed-to-soil contact which is critical for seed germination.

  • Lawn fertilization with a starter fertilizer, giving the newly planted seeds the needed nutrients for the best opportunity to thrive.

Grub Control

Beetle larva, more commonly known as grubs, are the white, C-shaped insects you may see in your yard. They live underground, so you may not know you have a grub infestation unless you see dead patches in your grass or your yard feels spongy. If you suspect grubs, pull back the turf—if the grass pulls up easily (almost like new sod), you may find white grubs in the top inch of the soil.

Grub control is most effective when applied as a preventative measure.

We offer two types of grub control:

  1. Year-long grub prevention, applied in early spring.

  2. Curative grub control for existing grubs. This is applied in the fall, when early identification has been established.

Weed Control

Weeds do not intimidate us!  We are proud to be able to control some of the most difficult to control lawn weeds in the state.  If you or your current lawn care company has had trouble irradicating weeds from your lawn such as Wild Strawberry, Violets, Ground Ivey, sedges, crabgrass, knot weed and many others give us a call!  We use special mixes at the appropriate times of year that ensure we can effectively control these weeds.  Just understand that it took time for these weeds to grow and establish themselves, it will take some time to eliminate them.

Our weed control includes treatment for the most common weeds in Maine:

  • Wild strawberry

  • Violets

  • Ground ivy

  • Nutsedge

  • Crabgrass

  • And other undesirable weeds!

Liquid Aeration

Your grass grows best when the soil in which it’s rooted is soft and thriving with microbial life. But a normal year of use will cause your soil to grow compacted, which stifles root growth by preventing key nutrients from reaching your grass’s roots. Hard soil also makes it more difficult for grass roots to push through the compacted dirt, which doesn’t help anything! The Turf Doctor’s Liquid Aeration consists of a special formula designed to break up and soften your soil, spurring healthy growth.

Liquid aeration benefits:

  • Increasing air and water flow to your grass’s roots.

  • Helping the roots of your lawn grow deeper.

  • Increased absorption and reduced pooling after rain.

  • Helping your grass naturally outcompete weeds and resilience to disease.

  • Breaking down thatch that impedes your grass’s access to nutrients.

  • It’s quicker, quieter, and less labor intensive than core aeration.

We can’t overstate how important aeration is to the health of your grass. If you and your family use your lawn heavily (which we hope you do!) you may need to aerate more frequently.

Common signs that your lawn is in need of liquid aeration:

  • Areas of heavy foot traffic have become brown and dry.

  • The soil in your lawn physically feels hard.

  • Water is pooling on your lawn, or running off, rather than absorbing.

  • Your grass seems to be struggling to fight off weeds and disease.

  • Your grass is laden with thatch, the yellow layer of dead grass that accumulates at the top of the soil.

If you’ve noticed any of these signs, or your lawn seems to be dull or yellow in color, liquid aeration can bring it back to its lush, green state.

Insect Control

We also address common turf insect pests in Maine such as Chinch Bugs, Billbugs, Sod Webworms, and Army worms.  These are mostly considered surface-feeding insect treatments that are included in the Platinum program.  We monitor degree days, inspecting for these insects on every treatment.  If damaging populations are found we will eliminate them at no additional cost.
