Controlling Weeds

The best defense against weeds is a strong lawn that won’t allow these unwanted plants to break through. When weeds do appear, however, understanding the way they live and grow helps us to control them.

Not all weeds are created equal

There are two basic groups of familiar weeds: broadleaf weeds, such as chickweed, spurge and dandelions, and grassy weeds, such as crabgrass and foxtail. Like most flowers, weeds are usually annuals (which grow, drop seed and die in one year), or perennials (which return year after year from the same root system).

It’s important to match the weed control to the type of weed. Pre-emergent weed controls are designed to stop grassy weeds (such as crabgrass) before seeds even germinate, while post-emergents work on broadleaf weeds that have already sprouted. In almost all cases, catching the weeds as early as possible in their growth cycle makes them easier to control.
